This painting has only just been finished, now, as I write in 2008.
Back in 1997, shortly after I'd painted Make Belief, I was again in
religious mode and the theme is pretty obvious. It was back then,
however, that my nephew, Michael (hi, Michael) was visiting from the UK
and we explored Adelaide as I also looked for images of nude men. Bought
several gay magazines, as he looked on with amusement, but found the
images I used in the Home Girls (and one of Blokes) Annuals.
The painting got hung in a few galleries but nobody liked it except me,
so it ended up at the back of my painting rack, getting dirtier and
dirtier, until it was exposed while I looked for something else and I
thought, dammit, I still like it.
Gave it a bit of a face-lift, tidied up the edges, strengthened the
colour and so on and when I sent a photo to Pivotal Gallery Tamsin asked
me to let her have it for the gallery, so there it is.
