Meditations on a Dead Parrot No 2
81 x 83 cms 2004
For Sale from The Channon Gallery, near Lismore, NSW
A parrot smashed into the studio window and broke its neck. I thought, dear, dear and put it in
the freezer. I am, however, indifferent to the equally significant
deaths of a multitude of creatures for both food and sport, so I created
this work in an attempt to paint these four creatures as both equal and
dead. It has nothing to do with either Christianity or crucifixes.
A first attempt at the piece included a foetus instead of the crab, but when the Fleurieu Prizes included a section based on the food industry, I did it all again, minus the foetus. Fortunately it was selected for exhibition and when it came home again I sent it off to Melbourne.
