The Frame's Worth Fifty Bucks

32 x 37 cms  1997

$350 Sold

When I came across this tiny, enormously elaborate frame I had to have it. It cost me $35, and the price was marked on the back so this was a joke that only the purchaser could appreciate. The canvas and painting were made to fit the frame, not the other way round.

We had done our best to breed cattle while we were living at Currency Creek, SA and, inevitably, ate them. The red-haired bloke was a travelling butcher, with a refrigerated trailer to hang the carcass. The killing and gutting all happened out there in the paddock.

I photographed the whole procedure, much to everyone's amusement and subsequent annoyance (it is very difficult, as a woman, trotting around very blokey blokes with my camera), and got this wonderful shot of the poor beast hung from a tree to be skinned.

This was hung in a solo show at Greenhill Gallery in 1998, and was the only one that sold, for $350.
