I was driving into Goolwa for the mail and saw these 3 Stobie poles lined up just like that, plus the row of trees in a paddock alongside, so I put it all together into a fairly ordinary painting. Then a visiting friend suddenly vehemently, needed to know why I didn't paint horses (we owned 3 at the time). Having no answer to this deeply philosophical question I followed the idea on from Interior with Oranges and painted a rip in the canvas to show the wall and a picture of an irritated horse (it is just lifting its leg to kick someone) behind. The number 42 on the white post is, as is generally known (via Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy), the meaning of life. This is, incidentally, the first time I mixed sand in with the paint for the roadside. I used the trees again in the first Carousel and also in Fence and Fairground. ** There are more notes on the ripped canvas on the Compare Use of Ripped Canvas Page. |
