On the way home from the Norton Gallery in Sydney we flew over our property and then the hills that I have painted so frequently, all highlighted by the late afternoon sunlight. For those who know the area, it's between Walker Flat and Mount Pleasant in S Australia. With a lot of luck, the photos I took all came out well. I did the painting for no other reason than that I wanted to. I painted the frame onto the canvas because I needed not only the feeling of looking down through something and the plane window was downright ugly, but also the composition needed to be held together, there being no verticals around. Also, patterns are fairly easy (I cut a stencil) and are usually fun. It's good to have a break from all those decisions involved in 'real' painting. **There is a comparison of my development in painting the Mount Lofty Ranges on the Compare Hills Page. |
