Italian Girls

   41 x 28 cms  1996

   $900 Sold

The front three women were taken from a photograph in the Bulletin of women demonstrating against pension decreases in Rome. It is extremely rare to find images of anyone truly screaming as I discovered while researching the smaller faces. I even bought myself a thing for capturing still video images into my computer (way before the days of DVD), but unfortunately screaming actresses all appeared to be 'screaming' - posed with their mouths open.

I have always enjoyed painting patterns. Not only can they be very effective compositionally but they are also extremely useful in defining the form of the person.

Having decided to use the photograph I was then stuck with what exactly the image was - a painting of a photograph or a painting of women screaming, so I ripped a corner of it stuck it on a wall.

My husband said, that is so Italian girls and the title stuck.

The photograph I took of it, way back before it was sold, was not good enough to use online, but the painting's owner recently contacted me and kindly sent me this good digital image.
