Chain, Hook and 3 Oil Drums

The hook was by the gate to our paddock. It had been buried in the dirt ever since we moved onto this property, and it is thick, rusty and handmade. The oildrums had also always been in a heap behind the shed, but the chain came from an op shop and cost $17.

The assemblage was complete in my head from the moment I brought the hook back to the studio. All it needed was the courage to cut up the oildrums and I felt very old, but it wasn't so terribly hard even though I made a tremendous mess. The red oildrum had a residue of ancient sump oil in the bottom and the most difficult bit was cleaning all that out.

It was tempting to leave the whole thing alone when the 3 drums were bolted together and it was up on the wall, but the graffiti was necessary to close the composition in, so I took a deep breath and added it. The problem with 'found objects' is there is only one of them and if I stuff it up, it's gone.
