  Chain and Post

Having picked up the emaciated post from the dirt behind my studio I could immediately see its long, slender shape dangling, twisted into a chain.

First problem was to find something for it to dangle from, but I found a completely hollow and very strong piece of weathered redgum out at Rawnsley Park in the Flinders Ranges. I even asked if I could have it.

The chain is the piece I bought on 27 May from a salvage yard the other side of Adelaide. I was going to cut it shorter, to hang free from the bottom of the post but not only did I like the way it piled up on the floor, the pile was also useful to make sure the post hung the right way round.

As with all these pieces, the most difficult part is to get them to attach securely to the wall. This is only attached at the left hand side of the hollow branch at the top, so the post and chain exert a very strong  diagonal pull against any bracket. Having partially filled the hollow branch with thixotropic epoxy to screw the home-made bracket into, it still fell down a great many times, and it was two days before I finally resolved it.
