I had decided to do these constructions after being so disappointed and disillusioned by Rosalie Gascoigne's retrospective exhibition in Melbourne, but had difficulty seeing past her work and others like her. Having had to finish the previous 2 paintings first, I had several weeks to think about them before I started, and eventually decided to do something I'd done before. I had such fun with this, though putting it together was difficult. The base is 12ml plywood, much lighter than MDF board and the 'walls' are fabric-covered 3ml MDF board, mounted so that there is a gap behind them. The rest is obvious. I gave it a good, hard shake when I'd finished it, glued back the toys that fell off, then shook it again. They're stuck with epoxy, so they should last. I was going to use the helicopter etc that were in the original painting, but I couldn't bear to part with them. This is going to be a problem with these things |
