These are the same figures that I used in the Grange kiosk painting, plus several more that I photographed in a shopping mall.
They were, in fact, sitting in a cafe, between the mall and myself when I photographed them, and the grumpy lady behind, said, 'Oh, are we in the way?' and I said, 'Oh no, I'm photographing over your shoulder,' so I took several more but I do sometimes wonder about the ethics of stealing people's souls in this way.
Then I had great difficulty with the mall. They're bitty, messy things and in the end I just made it up. I did attempt it once again, behind the Balloon Sculptor in 2006, but ended up obliterating the lot. A friend once said she intended to paint the inside of a supermarket, but where would you stop? At the brand names, or the list of ingredients?
