Vineyard Scarecrow
106 x 137 cms 2000
$3300 Sold
Nearly the last piece I did for the exhibition, this first scarecrow was very much an 'in-your-face' painting, straightforward, unambiguous and strongly confrontational. I must have been going through a really bad patch at the time. Too many neighbours asking me why I didn't paint pretty pictures like their auntie did, and she sold heaps! (Fortunately this one sold immediately.)
Having made the structure, which is life-sized, I cannibalised my wardrobe for the jacket and trousers but hunted op shops for weeks for the red shirt which, unfortunately, had been beautifully washed and ironed. The hat is my husband's. The gloves were lying outside the back door after a bout of weedspraying and I have never again found such perfect pink gloves.
The background is a view from Crows Nest Road, above Victor Harbor.
